Overview
This document will provide an overview of ad tags, how to upload them into the El Toro Portal, best practices, and frequently asked questions.
What Are Ad Tags?
Ad tags are small snippets of HTML or JavaScript code that are inserted into a web page to display advertisements. It is typically provided by an advertising network or an ad server, and its purpose is to dynamically serve and control the delivery of advertisements on a website.
When a web page containing an ad tag is loaded by a user's browser, the ad tag communicates with the ad server to request an appropriate ad. The ad server then responds by sending the ad content to be displayed in the designated ad space on the web page.
Ad tags enable the delivery and tracking of advertisements on websites by connecting the web page to the ad server and facilitating the display of relevant ads to users.
Ad tags are composed of:
-
Opening and closing script tags
-
Ad server URL
-
Ad unit identifier
-
Targeting parameters
-
Tracking and reporting codes
-
Display specifications

Best Practices
-
It is recommended to name your Ad Tags something unique to the campaign as providers will typically provide default names for the Ad Tags. This will make it easier to locate the correct Ad Tags in your creative library.
-
Ad tags are highly recommended as they provide increased tracking and analytics. They can provide detailed insights into ad performance, including impressions, clicks, conversions, and other engagement metrics. By using ad tags, you can gather valuable data to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns and make informed decisions for optimization.
FAQs
- Q: How will I know if my ad tag provider is supported by Xandr?
-
A: Most of the major tag providers (i.e. Double Click, Google Ad Manager) are supported. When you export your ad tags, you’ll see an option to select Xandr as the destination DSP. If this is not the case, please contact the ad tag provider to confirm. A representative from El Toro will reach out if there are any issues uploading your ad tags into Xandr.
-
- Q: Can El Toro provide the same reporting as my ad tag provider?
-
A: Every ad tag provider has a variety of reporting metrics. El Toro has a standard reporting menu that may not contain all the metrics available through your ad tag provider. El Toro does, however, offer proprietary post-campaign MatchBack Analysis reports to show true conversion results. You can see the available reporting options in our El Toro Reporting Menu (LINK HERE).

- Q: Can I use ad tags for mobile advertising?
-
A: Yes, ad tags can be used for mobile advertising. They can be optimized for serving on mobile devices and platforms.
