Overview
This document will serve as an instructional guide to Venue Replay, including what it is, how to use it, and best practices. Venue Replay allows you to choose a past time frame and draw GeoFrames on a map. El Toro then identifies devices that were at that location in the desired time frame, which are used to build audiences for targeting. This audience type allows you to deliver ads to those prospects seen within the GeoFrame(s) and the timeframe.
How to Create a Venue Replay Audience
Step 1: Navigate to the El Toro Portal and click on “Create” in the navigation pane on the left-hand side under the “Audiences” section.
Step 2: Select the “Venue Replay” tile from the options shown.
Step 3: Click on the Icon in the top right-hand corner of the map interface. This icon looks like a triangle with circles at each point. Clicking this icon places you in GeoFrame Mode. Select the search icon from the left-hand side of the map interface to enter an address and pinpoint the specific area you would like to GeoFrame.
Step 4: Once the user is in GeoFrame Mode, they may begin drawing GeoFrames. Click to place a vertex or point on the map to begin drawing your GeoFrame. Once the first vertex or point has been added, at least two additional points must be placed, with the final point connecting to the first point to complete the shape. You can include as many points as you need to accurately draw your shape.
If possible, avoid GeoFraming multi-use areas to ensure that identified devices belong to the intended audience. Please keep GeoFrames to less than 1 square mile in size, and limit the number of GeoFrames per audience to 8.
Step 5: After the GeoFrames have been drawn, select the appropriate time frame between which to collect the audience. On the right-hand side of the map interface, enter the start date and end date for the timeframe in which you would like to capture devices. NOTE: You can add multiple timeframes to the same GeoFrame by clicking “Add Another Timeframe.”
Step 6: After the time frame has been set, name the audience in the box below the stop date, add any additional notes, and click “Save” directly below.
Step 7: From here, the audience can be used in campaigns by being selected from the Audience Library during campaign creation. For instructions on how to create a campaign, please see: Creating a Campaign and Order Lines – El Toro Support Center
Best Practices
-
Make sure to precisely outline selected locations. We recommend that you avoid GeoFrames that cover sections of sidewalks, streets, and shared parking lots, which are likely to collect devices from passersby. This is likely to inflate your audience with people who you are not intending to target. Drawing a GeoFrame that crosses a road will usually pick up devices from drivers.
-
Limit the number of GeoFrames to 8 per audience, and size to less than 1 square mile per GeoFrame.
-
Cushion the intended timeframe by adding a few hours before and after a specific event occurred.
-
If you are targeting large events such as a convention, and you want to make sure to capture the largest audience you can, try to target other areas where attendees are likely to be. For example, also GeoFraming hotels where you know attendees are staying would increase the size of the audience captured.
FAQs
-
Q: Are people within my GeoFrame being sent my ads in real-time?
-
A: No, Venue Replay identifies the device IDs of users who were located within the GeoFrame(s) during a timeframe in the past. Our tool for targeting users within a GeoFrame in real-time is called Map Polygon.
-
-
Q: Will Venue Replay capture every device that was in the area at a given time?
-
A: There are many factors that could impact counts within a certain timeframe. Users must be active on their devices in order to be captured. (i.e. More people are likely to be captured sitting in a restaurant than in a movie theater) Review our best practices in order to ensure that counts are maximized.
-
-
Q: Can I draw more than one GeoFrame in an audience?
-
A: Yes! The maximum number of GeoFrames per audience is 8. The maximum size of each GeoFrame is 1 square mile.
-
We recommend creating a new Venue Replay audience anytime you have more than 8 polygons in a single audience, or if polygons are located more than 10 miles away from each other. Keeping all polygons in an audience near each other allows all of the buckets to more easily fit on screen while you create/edit them.

-
Q: Can I draw GeoFrames around neighborhoods or other residential areas?
-
A: Venue Replay is rarely a good choice for targeting residential areas. Consider our Digital Canvassing tool as a potential solution or use a ZIP List to target homes within one or more ZIP Codes. Please reach out to your sales executive with any further questions.
